Sandy largely spares state, University

Hurricane Sandy has departed, leaving Charlottesville mostly untouched but sending waves flooding through Maryland and cutting power in New York City. The University canceled classes Monday and Tuesday as a safety precaution, marking the first time the University has ever canceled two consecutive days of classes, University Historian Alexander “Sandy” Gilliam said.

Vice-presidential candidate visits Charlottesville

Republican Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan visited Charlottesville Thursday for a rally outside the Crutchfield Corporation promoting Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign and local Republicans running for Congress. With 12 days before the general election, both Republican and Democratic campaigns have paid great attention to Albemarle County, an important area up for grabs in the swing state of Virginia.

Bruce Springsteen to perform free concert Tuesday

Bruce Springsteen is set to perform a free concert Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion in support of the Barack Obama campaign. The Obama for America-hosted-event is part of the campaign’s effort to turn out voters across Virginia. “I’m here today because for thirty years I’ve been writing about the distance between the American dream and the American reality,” Springsteen said during a recent appearance in Iowa.

City council supports acting treasurer

Charlottesville City Council Monday evening unanimously endorsed a resolution that would allow Jason Vandever, the chief deputy city treasurer who is currently the acting city treasurer, to continue in his post through the November 2013 elections. Judge Edward Hogshire, the local circuit court judge, must decide whether the City is required to hold a special election to fill the position of city treasurer until the 2013 general election.

Voter registration ends for Virginia residents

Trump buys deceased TV mogul's Albemarle mansion

The Trump Organization, owned and operated by celebrity CEO Donald Trump, purchased Albemarle Mansion last week. The mansion in the Albemarle countryside belonged to entrepreneur and TV mogul John Kluge, who was worth $6.5 billion in March 2010.

Hundreds of Charlottesville residents gathered in Lee Park Saturday to celebrate LGBTQ communities. The city’s first ever gay pride festival was organized by Cville Pride, a community network that organizes events to promote equality in the area.

City holds first pride festival

The City of Charlottesville hosted its first ever gay pride festival Saturday afternoon in Lee Park to show support for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer communities. The festival, which was held at the site of last year’s Occupy Charlottesville protests, drew hundreds of individuals and featured live entertainment, food from local vendors and activities for children.
