Virginia storms this season's top-10 rankings

All four ACC men’s lacrosse teams secured top-10 rankings in both major 2013 preseason polls released in the last several days — the USILA Coaches’ Poll and Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. Maryland, the national runner-up in 2011 and 2012, is the highest ranked of the ACC squad.

Starsia reveals impressive recruiting class

Virginia coach Dom Starsia revealed his official 2013-14 recruiting class earlier this week. Several marquee names highlight the list of 10 recruits, including Matt Barrett, Inside Lacrosse’s top-rated rising senior goaltender, and Matt Emery, the younger brother of junior All-American Rob Emery.

Title defense falls short

After surviving a 6-5 thriller against Princeton in the first round, the Virginia men’s lacrosse team unceremoniously exited May’s NCAA men’s lacrosse playoffs with a 12-10 quarterfinal loss to Notre Dame in Chester, Pa. The loss snuffed out the Cavaliers’ gambit to become the first repeat men’s lacrosse national champions since Syracuse won back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009.

The No. 1 Virginia men's lacrosse team defeated No. 20 Drexel 9-8 Saturday in its season opener at Vidas Field.

The No. 1 Virginia men's lacrosse team takes the field to face No. 20 Drexel Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers, currently top-ranked in major polls and the unanimous top pick in the coaches' poll, begin their title defense without the services of departed seniors Bray Malphrus, John Haldy and Adam Ghitelman.

Following an enthralling 2011 championship campaign, the unanimous preseason No. 1 Virginia men's lacrosse team aims to handle the pressure of massive expectations and win a second consecutive national title when it opens its 2012 season this weekend. As in 2011, Virginia enters the season as the clear favorite to win the championship, with both the USILA Coaches and Inside Lacrosse polls deeming the Cavaliers the nation's top squad.

Duke downs squad twice in two weeks

The No. 10 Virginia men's lacrosse team suffered its second loss in consecutive weeks to No. 6 Duke as it fell to the Blue Devils, 19-10, in the ACC Tournament semifinals and failed to defend its 2010 conference title. Junior midfielder Colin Briggs started the scoring early for the Cavaliers (8-5) with a fast-break goal only 1:23 into the first quarter.
