Task Force apprehends 17 suspects on drug distribution charges

Local police forces concluded a four-month undercover operation Tuesday with the apprehension of 17 suspects on a variety of drug distribution charges, including crack cocaine and marijuana dealing. Police also are investigating and plan to serve several more warrants to area offenders as part of Operation: Fall Round-Up. With the help of the Bureau Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Jefferson Area Drug Enforcement Task Force officers focused their investigation on open-air markets in various neighborhoods, mainly around central Charlottesville. Crackdown JADE Task Force agents arrested the following individuals: Roderick Banks with one count of cocaine distribution. Barbie Berry with two counts of cocaine distribution. Alvin James Cabell with one count of cocaine distribution. Russell Carter with three counts of cocaine distribution. Thomas James Scott with two counts of cocaine distribution. Curtis Gilmore with one count of cocaine distribution. Cortez Ralph Jefferies with one count of cocaine distribution. Adrian Maurice Johnson with two counts of cocaine distribution. Christian Lockley with one count of imitation cocaine distribution. Carlos Martin with one count of cocaine distribution. Rita Michie with two counts of cocaine distribution. Luther Lamore Smith with one count of cocaine distribution. Jamol Lekey Walker with one count of cocaine distribution. George Wilson with one count of cocaine distribution and one count of imitation cocaine distribution. Damien Maurice Woodfolk with one count of cocaine distribution. Kenneth Wayne Farrish with two counts of marijuana distribution. Kenneth Daniel Mahunik with one count of marijuana distribution.

University plans new Passport Program

Students, deans and faculty members may soon be crossing more cultural borders through a newly planned project, the Passport Program, which is designed to promote attendance at University programs normally unfamiliar to students. Participants in Passport will attend at least six University events such as programming on cultural issues, religious events, political viewpoints, social or community causes, or sexual orientations during the course of a semester, Assistant Dean of Students Pablo Davis said.

Gilmore aims to enhance two universities

As Gov. James S. Gilmore III prepares for the last days of his term, he is working to tie up business lingering from the beginning of his four years in office. Gilmore announced Tuesday that Virginia will increase funding to Norfolk State University and Virginia State University by over $10 million during the next four years.

Two more schools freeze faculty searches

The Architecture School and Education School have decided to delay hiring searches until the Virginia General Assembly devises a solution to statewide budget problems. The move to freeze any new recruitment efforts - which the College also did last week - functions as a way to prevent more drastic cuts for the two schools in the future, officials have said. The statewide Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign held its kick-off ceremony for the year at Carr's Hill yesterday morning. The CVC is an annual charity drive through which state employees can give to their choice of more than 1,000 charities.

Auburn fraternities face steep penalties

Auburn University officials are now confronting two separate incidents in which fraternity members wore Halloween costumes that many deemed offensive because of their racial nature. Auburn withdrew recognition of its chapter of Beta Theta Pi fraternity after members posed in photographs at a party wearing blackface and jerseys with letters of a black fraternity.

Stafford speaks on history of Secret Service

U.S. Secret Service Director Brian L. Stafford spoke to a packed house Friday night at the weekly Jefferson Literary and Debating Society meeting. "His talk was very informative, well put-together and entertaining," said Lauren Purnell, a third-year College student and member of the Jefferson Society. Stafford primarily spoke on the history of the Secret Service, but also discussed his own career and the importance of choosing a career you love. "The Secret Service is a labor of love for me - I enjoy talking about it," said Stafford, who has directed the Secret Service since 1999, in an interview yesterday. In 1865, on the morning of the day he was shot, President Lincoln signed the Secret Service into law.

IFC elects new vice president for membership

As the Greek system gears up for next semester's formal rush, the Inter Fraternity Council will be going through the process with a new vice president for membership. According to sources in the IFC, third-year Engineering student Tom Davison was elected to replace fourth-year College student Kevin Dixon as vice president.
