The University ranked 10th among large-sized universities for producing the most Peace Corps volunteers last year.
The Tayloe Murphy Center at the Darden School will introduce the Tayloe Murphy Resilience Awards Competition this spring, a state-based competition that aims to recognize entrepreneurs that have thrived despite a struggling economy. The awards are designed to recognize local businesses that have continued to grow, regardless of the hard economic hits to the local community, said Assoc.
Four bills that would have limited the percentage of out-of-state students admitted to Virginia state colleges and universities were tabled by a House of Delegates subcommittee Monday. These proposals would have mandated state colleges and universities to admit a somewhat higher percentage of in-state students.
Members of the American Indian Student Union hope to establish a Native Studies minor within the College.
The North Grounds Recreation Center reopened at 5:30 this morning after having been closed because of safety concerns caused by the heavy snow accumulation on its roof. The roof of the facility is designed to bend and did so "significantly" because of the weight of the snow, said Chief Facilities Officer Donald Sundgren, whose department advised intramural sports to close the building. Nevertheless, the weather since has allowed the facility to reopen. "We had some good help from the sunshine [yesterday] in melting the snow," Sundgren said. All other University recreation facilities have remained open. "All of our buildings are doing really well right now," said Kelly Bernier, assistant director of fitness programs. -compiled by Amanda Morgan

President John T. Casteen, III delivered his 20th and final State of the University address yesterday in Old Cabell Hall auditorium. The U.S. Supreme Court agreed Thursday to hear Abbott v. United States of America, in which the Supreme Court Litigation Clinic of the University Law School will represent the petitioner, Kevin Abbott. With the help of the Supreme Court Litigation Clinic, Abbott is contesting a sentence he received from the U.S.
Greek organizations part of the Inter-Fraternity and Inter-Sorority Councils saw an increase in student participation this year, despite inclement weather during recruitment and continuing economic troubles. The IFC reported that 812 students participated in its spring rush this year, compared to 693 students in 2009, IFC President Charles Gamper said.

The Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009 will take effect Feb. 22, instituting a series of regulations to protect consumers younger than 21 years of age from excessive debt.
