The Virginia volleyball team competed in the Pepperdine Invitational in Malibu, Calif. this weekend, dropping a pair of 3-1 decisions to Colorado State and Pepperdine before posting a 3-2 comeback against UC Santa Barbara to close out the tournament. Although the Cavaliers (4-2) only went 1-2 on the weekend, freshman Haley Kole had something of a coming-out party.
Last season, the Virginia men’s soccer team graduated only two seniors and featured a team that had 18 freshmen and sophomores.
Following the Virginia football team’s blowout loss to Oregon, I was feeling burned out as a sports fan. The rest of my weekend—consisting of running into Virginia basketball players and watching Week 1 NFL action—has me feeling re-energized.
The No. 5 Virginia women’s soccer team added two more blowout victories to its resume this weekend, closing non-conference play with a perfect 6-0 record for the first time since 2004.
A crowd of 58,502 was on hand to witness the brutal 59-10 thrashing No. 2 Oregon doled out to Virginia Saturday afternoon, the largest crowd at Scott Stadium since a 38-0 blowout loss to Virginia Tech in the final game of the 2011 season. That fact was not lost on many of the Cavalier players.
Oregon’s speed and athleticism were on full display from kickoff Saturday, as the No. 2 Ducks’ (2-0) Marcus Mariota and De’Anthony Thomas repeatedly gashed the Virginia (1-1) defense in a 49-point drubbing at Scott Stadium.
The Cavaliers (1-2-0) were fell to physical Clemson (3-0-0), 2-0, in their third game of the season.
