Men's squad hosts home finale vs. Virginia Tech

The Virginia men’s soccer team looks to put the finishing touches on an encouraging week when it faces off against Virginia Tech at Klöckner Stadium Friday evening in the squad’s final home contest of the regular season. The Cavaliers (7-6-1, 1-4 ACC) come off a 3-2 win against Wright State Tuesday that served as an important rebound from an embarrassing 4-1 loss to Wake Forest at home late last week.

Cavs rebound, snag 3-2 victory vs. Wright State

The Virginia men’s soccer team bounced back from Friday’s disappointing 4-1 loss to Wake Forest with a 3-2 victory Tuesday evening against non-conference foe Wright State. Despite the thin margin of victory, coach George Gelnovatch saw tangible signs of progress. “We’re going to take all the positives we can out of this game, which are three great goals,” Gelnovatch said.

In the span of a few hours not only was my admittedly unlikely dream of an Orioles-Nationals World Series crushed, but the Nationals completed what will become known as one of the most infamous playoff collapses in recent D.C.

Skidding Cavs drop two tight tests at home

After dropping two tough matches this weekend against North Carolina and N.C. State, the Virginia volleyball team still seeks its first conference victory. Entering the weekend, the Cavaliers (5-14, 0-9 ACC) hoped to snap a six-match losing streak by defeating the Tar Heels (15-4, 6-3 ACC). Virginia’s 25-18 loss in the first set seemed to dash any thoughts of halting the skid, but the team rebounded to win the second set 25-21 — the first time Virginia has broken 20 points in a second set since beating Liberty Sept.

Virginia squad suffers OT defeat in big game

The No. 5 Virginia field hockey team fell to No. 2 North Carolina Saturday in a battle between the ACC’s top two teams. Virginia (13-3, 2-1 ACC) had not lost to a top-five opponent all year, and the Tar Heels (15-1, 4-0 ACC) needed all of regulation plus six minutes of overtime to achieve victory. North Carolina sophomore forward Loren Shealy scored the game’s first goal five minutes into the contest, but Virginia redshirt senior midfielder Michelle Vittese tied the game 15 minutes later after dribbling a penalty corner into the middle of the circle and launching a successful shot.

Good job, good effort, bad times

The Virginia players exited the field in misery after Saturday’s 27-20 Homecomings loss to archrival Maryland that all but sent their bowl chances, like their new indoor practice facility, up in smoke. For all the moralizing rhetoric out there about the indomitable power of teamwork and persistence and a “can do” attitude, they aren’t enough to outweigh the torturous disappointment of coming up short.

Cavs breeze to 3-0 triumph against Hurricanes

The No. 9 Virginia women’s soccer team cruised past ACC foe Miami 3-0 Thursday night, appearing to move beyond a rough patch during which the Cavaliers lost two of three games. Virginia (11-3-1, 4-2-1 ACC) broke the scoring open early on the first of two goals senior forward Caroline Miller notched.

Cross country squads face top national contenders at Wisconsin

It takes more than one or two superstars to make a cross country team. The Virginia men’s and women’s programs undeniably possess the requisite frontrunners for a special season, but their depth has come into question and will define the direction each squad takes in the coming weeks. Friday’s showdown against many of the nation’s top programs at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational will serve as a pivotal benchmark two weeks away from the ACC Championships.
