Healing Cavs look to 'make things happen' against UAB

The Virginia women's volleyball team will look to bounce back from a disappointing start to ACC play when it travels south to face off against Duke tonight and Wake Forest tomorrow. Last weekend, the Cavaliers (6-11, 0-2 ACC) fell to Clemson (16-2, 2-0) on Friday and to 25th-ranked Georgia Tech (11-6, 2-0) on Saturday. In their ACC opener against the Tigers, Virginia junior libero Whitney Ashcraft recorded a career-high 29 digs and junior outside hitter Katie Synan notched a career-best 22 kills.

Cavs back on the right track, trample Thundering Herd

After a disappointing road trip, the Virginia men's soccer team has returned to its winning ways, defeating Marshall 3-0 last night at Kl ckner Stadium and recording its second straight shutout victory. In their eighth non-division game, the Cavaliers exhibited a newfound confidence that resulted in 25 shots on goal and the kind of strong teamwork the Cavaliers had been lacking. Freshman midfielder Joe Vide scored off a corner kick 12 minutes into the first half.

Virginia looks to tame Thundering Herd

There's no place like home. The Virginia men's soccer team faces off against Marshall tonight at 7 in Klockner Stadium for their sixth non-ACC match. The Cavaliers hope to repair their 4-4 overall record (1-2 ACC), after breaking a four-game losing streak and landing the first conference win of their season with a shutout victory over North Carolina State 4-0 on Saturday. "Everything was better," Virginia coach George Gelnovatch said of the improvement exhibited last week.

Redone Wizards have new tricks

Last week Michael Jordan decided to give his knee and Father Time another challenge, saying he will be suiting up yet again in a Washington Wizards uniform to play at least one more year in the NBA. The announcement does not overshadow the fact that the face of the Wizards has changed yet again. Jordan came back last year and we were told to be patient, his young team adjusting to his leadership and the old legs getting used to the hard court.

Cavaliers deadlock Richmond at one

After falling out of the top 25 for the first time since 1993 and losing their conference opener Saturday, the Virginia women's soccer team had insult added to their injury by a less talented Richmond Spiders team (5-2-1) who managed to hold Virginia (5-4-1) to a 1-1 tie last night. Even with many scoring opportunities in overtime, including two within 10 feet and only the goalie to beat, a Cavalier offense that six days ago was potent enough to tally eight goals against Temple, suddenly became impotent in crunch time against a scrappy Richmond team. The two teams entered the second half locked in a scoreless tie.

Virginia falls to fierce Tiger team

On a breezy Saturday at Klockner Stadium, the No. 16 Virginia women's soccer team fell to the Clemson Tigers, 1-0, in a defensive battle that was Virginia's first time opening the ACC season at home since 1994. In the middle of a four-game home stand and coming off an 8-1 drubbing of the Temple Owls, Virginia (5-3-1, 0-1 ACC) was looking to keep things going against the Tigers, but never could get their offense synchronized. "The offense is off kilter," Virginia Coach Steve Swanson said.
