Wrestling seeks success at ACC Championships

The No. 12 Virginia wrestling team will travel to Blacksburg, Va. for the ACC Championship tournament this Saturday. At stake will be 34 stamped tickets to Oklahoma City for the NCAA Championship the following week, a great deal of pride and the illustrious ACC Championship trophy.

Wrestling tangles with adversity, enjoys banner year

This was banner season for 12th-ranked Virginia wrestling. The Cavaliers (18-3, 5-1 ACC) recorded the second-most wins in program history, made then-No. 8 Virginia Tech their highest-ranked victim ever while snapping an eight-match losing streak to the Hokies, and captured their first Virginia Duals banner.

ACC honors four Cavalier athletes

The ACC tabbed four Virginia athletes for weekly awards Tuesday. Honorees included redshirt junior wrestler Joe Spisak, sophomore lacrosse player James Pannell, junior JB Kolod of the men’s swim and dive team and freshman swimmer Leah Smith.

No. 13 wrestling edges Maryland, crushes Bucknell

The No. 13 Virginia wrestling team, coming off its first ACC loss of the season, captured a pair of home wins against Maryland and Bucknell this weekend. The Cavaliers (15-3, 3-1 ACC) narrowly escaped a late comeback by the Terrapins (5-8, 1-3 ACC) to prevail 16-15 Friday. Virginia then easily downed the Bison (7-9, 3-2 EIWA) 29-12 Sunday.

The No. 13 Virginia wrestling team returns home to battle a familiar foe in Maryland on Friday. The Cavaliers, who have not wrestled in Memorial Gym in nearly three months, aim to hand the Terrapins a decisive loss in a known arena.

No. 12 matmen sweep weekend foes

The No. 12 Virginia wrestling team picked up two more wins over the weekend. The Cavaliers (13-2, 2-0 ACC) brushed aside Duke 30-6 Friday before outlasting Old Dominion 20-12 in a grueling, hard fought match.

Virginia looks to continue its successful season with two road matchups in the next three days. Friday, the Cavaliers (11-2, 1-0 ACC) will play at Duke before travelling to face Old Dominion two days later.

No. 13 Wrestling captures Virginia Duals title

The No. 13 Virginia wrestling team captured the Virginia Duals crown over the weekend for the first time in program history, winning all three of its bouts during the two-day tournament. The top-seeded Cavaliers earned victories against Chattanooga, fifth-seeded Kent State, and second-seeded No. 14 Edinboro on their way to the title.
