utris' yearning for 'Home' fuels vision

From romantic misunderstandings to spiritual misgivings, the rock 'n' roll and punk melodies of utris' third album, "The Long Walk Home," recounts the pivotal moments in a boy's maturation into a man. &nbsp Liner Notes Album: "The Long Walk Home" Artist: Utris Featuring: "The Long Walk Home" "Some Gurls"Grade: B Each song articulates a different aspect of the difficulties of becoming a man in the modern world, describing an incredible journey "home." But these four men may already be there. Although the theme of the album is derived from the hardships of growing up, the songs themselves are uniquely pleasant. utris clearly prides itself on its individual sound, but the album's intro does little justice to the band's style.

'Forever Plaid': time travel with barbershop crooners

Before there were hair salons and Gillette Sensor Razors, there were barber shops. They had striped poles, a soda fountain next door and maybe a Woolworth's across the street. And while the men sat around reading the morning paper and posing for Norman Rockwell paintings, they listened to the doo-wop sounds of Barbershop Quartets.

Local bands provide musical safe haven

While costume parties, horror movies and haunted houses tend to dominate Halloween festivities, Motherstone Productions offers a gala this weekend that concentrates more on the "treat" aspect of candy-lovers' favorite holiday. Tonight, at the Charlottesville Performing Arts Center, Nickeltown, Mississippi Tom & the Mudcats, Afrikan Drum Festival and numerous other native Charlottesville talents will perform at "Gimme Shelter," part of a project that will benefit the Shelter for Help in Emergency (SHE). The event also serves as a CD release party for SHE's newly-issued compilation disc. The Shelter CD reads like a Trax greatest hits list, featuring over 20 local artists such as the Dave Matthews Band, John McCutcheon, John D'earth, Baaba Seth, Van Devon, Sharon Worrell, The Secret, Cynthia Burke, Claire Quilty and many others.
