Double standards
If Osama bin Laden were invited to speak at the University, would The Cavalier Daily's only concern be free speech and politeness ("'Hoos against Yoo," March 23)? Of course not, because he's not American. But he's never been alleged to have killed more than a tiny fraction of the number of people dead in Iraq as a result of an illegal war that John Yoo helped authorize. Yoo, however, is American. Is it possible that there is a simple and barbaric prejudice hidden beneath your principled stand for diversity of opinion?

There's nothing in the article that gives any weight to your argument. The article advocates for the value of diversity of opinion. There's no mention of nationality whatsoever. Furthermore, I certainly think the fact that Bin Laden is not American would be the last concern of this publication or this university in the rediculously improbable possibility that he were to speak here. Frankly, I'm rather ashamed that you can call yourself an alumnus of the University.

I am also ashamed, in fact if there was some way I could I would advocate for removal of your diploma. Not just for the good points Narcan made but for the fact that you are defaming Yoo with no knowledge of what he actually did other then what you have heard. Yoo in his position was LEGALLY obligated to write exactly what he did. If you were in his position in the administration you too would have had to write exactly the same things he did. If Virginia had a law about stop signs that expired on the 30th of December and a new one didn't go into effect until January 1st any lawyer would be legally obligated to tell you that it would be legal to run a stop sign on the 31st. Does that mean the lawyer thinks its a good idea, No it doesn't. Yoo resigned his post shortly after this perhaps because he disagreed with the direction that the administration took. The only thing he ever wrote a brief on was torture so how do you bring in the topic of war? If you can not produce some never before seen documents that prove John Yoo did more then what he was legally obligated please display them. Until then Cav daily please print a retraction for printing a Letter to the Editor that contains falsified information and defames the character of an innocent man. If you want to protest about torture how about you make sure you are going after those responsible instead of torturing an innocent middleman?
