The stars of track and field

I would like to point out to the writers of the Sports section that there are major Olympic sports currently underway at the University. There have been a couple track and field meets this season already, and there have been a multitude of great marks set on both sides, men's and women's.

On the men's side we currently have a triple jumper, Marcus Robinson, who is ranked first in the nation and ninth in the world. His recent win in Arkansas, with a jump of 54'6 3/4", set a school record and automatically qualified him for the National Collegiate Athletic Association indoor tournament.

Also on the men's side we have had a school record broken in the men's weight throw. Enzo Chiariello accomplished this feat in January at the Pennsylvania State Invitational with a throw of 63'7". Chiariello is currently ranked 35th in the NCAA. Princeton transfer Mark Amirault broke the men's 3000m school record with a run of 7:54:08 and is ranked 19th in the NCAA. A two-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion in the 800m, Anthony Kostelac ran a 4:02 mile in Seattle this past weekend. Freshman Nick Vena is currently second in Virginia history in the men's indoor shot put and is ranked 17th in the nation; he has thrown as far as 60'6".

On the women's side, Maureen Laffen has had big throws, including one of 60'10" which is the second longest in Virginia history. All-American Morgane Gay has automatically qualified for the NCAA championships in the women's mile with a time of 4:34:38, a time which is .06 seconds off the school record and ranks her fifth in the nation. Pearl Bickersteth is ranked in the top 50 in the nation in women's high jump, having cleared 5'8".

There are many other great performances from this amazing team which I can not recall off the top of my head. I am very disappointed, however, in the lack of coverage, considering the amount of talent on this squad and how they are performing this year. I hope to see a change because these athletes deserve recognition just as much as the rest of the teams covered in your paper.
