Men's tennis sweeps weekend against Notre Dame, Boston College

Dominant, resilient, monumental — any of these adjectives would accurately describe the Virginia men’s tennis team’s two wins this weekend over ACC foes Notre Dame (10-7, 2-3 ACC) and Boston College (6-9, 0-4 ACC).

Following a rocky start to the season, the ninth-ranked Cavaliers (12-3, 5-0 ACC) have now won their first five matchups in the ACC, extending their historic ACC winning streak to 129 straight matchups in conference. Their streak isn’t just historic for the school or the sport — it’s the longest winning streak in any sport in ACC history. In similar fashion, the Cavaliers thoroughly controlled play — as they have all season in conference — from start to finish in both matches.

Against the No. 36 Fighting Irish Friday, the No. 19 combination of sophomore Luca Corinteli and junior Ryan Shane upset the No. 14 team of sophomores Eddy Covalschi and Josh Hagar, 8-5, to secure the doubles point.

Following that, and despite adverse outdoor conditions, the Cavaliers won five of six matches, with the No. 3 Shane being the lone upset at the number one position, as he fell to No. 22 junior Quentin Monaghan in straight sets.

Even with Shane’s loss, Virginia easily won 6-1 before their quick turnaround to travel to Boston College for a Sunday matinee.

In Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, Virginia carried its momentum to a convincing 7-0 victory that featured junior Jonathan Cornish’s first-ever ACC victory.

After securing the doubles point with wins from sophomore Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and junior Mac Styslinger at the first position and Corinteli and freshman Collin Altamirano at the third position, the Cavaliers swept singles. Sophomore J.C. Aragone — at the fourth position — was first to finish, followed by freshman Henrik Wiersholm at three, Kwiatkowski at two and Altamirano from the top position.

Although the match’s result was no longer in doubt, Corinteli and Cornish both played out their matches at 5 and 6, with Cornish securing his first ever ACC singles victory.

Although Virginia’s combined score of 13-1 this weekend was convincing and should provide the team with plenty of confidence as the Cavaliers host No. 10 North Carolina and No. 6 Duke next weekend in what will likely be one of the most difficult weekends the Cavaliers have to endure.
