Waiting to volunteer
University students showed off their commitment to serve Saturday by lining both sides of Rugby Road from Madison House to Madison Hall. The group, consisting mainly of pre-med hopefuls, earnestly waited in line to sign up for a volunteer position at the University hospital.
Second-year College student Bryan Maxwell said he arrived around 8 p.m. Friday night, 21 hours before the doors opened, just so he could assure himself a position in the front of the line.
"I heard if you have a particular unit that you want, you should sleep out," first-year College student Erin Kelleher said.
Kelleher, who arrived at 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning so that she could sign up for one of the few openings as an E.R. representative, said that she thought 300 to 400 people were waiting in line by the time she was allowed in the doors at 5:10 p.m.
Honoring scholarship
The National Society of Collegiate Scholars held an induction ceremony for close to 1,000 first- and second-year students who earned a cumulative GPA of 3.4 in their first two semesters at the University.
Chapter President Jonathan D. Chananie said that NSCS members are expected to promote high standards throughout the community.
"With scholarship comes an obligation to the community to obtain leadership positions and promote service," Chananie said.
