VICS clash leads to second arrest

University Police arrested third-year College student Arun Jesudian last night on charges of assault and battery following an incident that occurred Saturday between him and third-year College student Richard Kim.

"It was alleged that he [Jesudian] had assaulted Mr. Kim," University Police Sgt. Cassandra Carter said.

Jesudian was arrested at the end of last night's International Relations Organization meeting in Jefferson Hall. Jesudian currently serves as IRO president.

He was released on his own recognizance last night provided that he promises to appear at his April 19th court date.

The arrest "took me completely by surprise," Jesudian said after his release.

The incident occurred Saturday upon Kim's refusal to remove trash from the IRO office during the Virginia International Conference Simulation, a model U.N. conference hosted by IRO. After Kim and another IRO member had a verbal argument, Jesudian was called to handle the situation.

After a verbal dispute, a fight allegedly ensued outside Newcomb Hall.

Kim was arrested following the incident after Jesudian called the police to have Kim removed from the conference.

Jesudian alleges that Kim refused to leave the premises when he originally asked him to do so.

Kim then filed a warrant for arrest on assault charges against Jesudian Sunday.

Each alleges that the other party initiated the fight.

"He punched me in the jaw closed fisted," Jesudian said. "I never attempted to strike him back."

But Kim says he was not responsible for the fight.

"I felt as though he started it," Kim said. "I wasn't guilty."

The maximum penalty for misdemeanor assault and battery is up to six months in jail and/or a $2,500 fine.
