Housing Web site to help student renters

Safety, location and money are three things to consider before signing an off-Grounds housing lease. To help students with the complicated renting process, Student Council soon will launch a Web site to guide students through the paperwork.

The site will provide information on finding off-Grounds housing, landlord-tenant relations and safety to make moving off Grounds as smooth as possible, Housing Committee Co-Chairwoman Katherine Martini said.

"I have reviewed what the site says they are going to do, and it looks good to me," Student Legal Services Director Lester Wilson said.

Wilson said he feels that posting the housing experiences of other students will help educate those looking for off-Grounds housing.

For third-year College student Amanda Crane, who lives on Jefferson Park Avenue, the site will provide a valuable service to those looking for off-Grounds housing.

"It's a good idea to have a site that offers information on the expenses and regulations that go along with living off Grounds," Crane said.

Council also will launch another Web site, but for a very different purpose. An arts Web site, entitled, "thelightbulb.org" will provide an online resource and community for creative work at the University.

The site is still under construction, but the finished product will have a gallery for students to display creations ranging from written work to short films. It will also provide resources for those interested in art and a forum for students to discuss and critique each other's work.

Arts Committee Co-Chairman Johnny Lee, who is heading the project, said he hopes the site will bring together students who enjoy art.

Lee said the Media Studies Department has been very supportive of the project, and Council is updating its server to enable the Arts Committee to run the site efficiently.

"I think it's great that students will have a place to show their work. It might help someone to get discovered," fourth-year College student Josh Holmes said.

Arts Committee Co-Chairman Danny Reid is pleased with progress.

"It's a great opportunity for students at U.Va. to share their work and view the work of others," Reid said.
