MTV to invade with Wyclef, De La Soul

MTV's Campus Invasion Tour is making its way to the University on Oct. 5, featuring hip-hop artists Wyclef Jean, De La Soul and Black Eyed Peas.

In addition to the nighttime concert, there will be a daytime festival with tents offering various music-related activities, such as a Rock Tent, where participants can learn to play musical instruments.

The University, which is slated to be the second college on the six-week tour, also will be featured in a half-hour MTV kick-off special providing an inside look at the tour.

Lisa Braun, MTV's vice president of promotion and music marketing, said the special will feature portions of the concert as well as interviews with the artists and University students.

The University Programs Council's PK German is sponsoring the event.

PK German Chairman Jbeau Lewis said the show will provide MTV's audience with exposure to the University.

The "stellar lineup" of musicians will attract a diverse audience "more so than anything we've done in the past," he said.

PK German tries "to find that right balance between the diversity of the school and the diversity of acts out there," he added. Concerts sponsored by PK German have never sold out, Lewis said, but he is hopeful most of the 5,000 tickets available will go quickly.

Braun said the tour, which is in its fifth semester, is designed to offer music college-aged viewers want to hear.

"The promotion department's focus is to take MTV off the channel and out to the viewers," she said.

The last tour featured acts like techno artist Moby and alternative band Bush.

Fourth-year College student Myung Kim said hip-hop probably will attract a large audience.

"I think you never know what the typical University student listens to, so I think there will be a good turnout," Kim said.

Second-year College student Chris Johnson said the tour should attract an audience of all age groups.

"I think it's cool because it's going to draw people from the community to the University," Johnson said.

Third-year Nursing student Rachel Dean said the show will be successful because of its lineup.

"I'm looking forward to a good show because [Wyclef] was really good the last time I saw him," Dean said.

The concert is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 5 at University Hall. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8. The daytime festival will be from noon to 5 p.m.

Tickets are available at the Newcomb Hall Box Office, Plan 9 or by calling 924-7314. The cost for University students is $15 in advance and $18 at the door.
