Stop and smell the roses
With barely more than a week of classes left in the semester, students and faculty alike are stressing over end-of-the-year papers and exams. But for those who want to stop and smell the roses, the University will showcase its finest flora tomorrow as part of the annual Historic Garden Week in Virginia.
Deans and professors living on East Lawn will open their pavilion homes for public viewing from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Fourth-year College student Don Koons also will have his room open, as well as fellow Lawn resident and fourth-year College student Esther Bell.
"We have to be there and entertain," Koons said, adding that the Garden Club of Virginia has donated flowers to display in front of his room.
"I guess I have to clean," Koons added with a laugh.
The Edgar Allen Poe Room on the West Range and the President's house at Carr's Hill also will be open for self-guided tours.
Jan Stalfort, co-chair for Historic Garden Week in Charlottesville and Albemarle County, said the proceeds from the week will be used to restore gardens in the area.
One possible use of the proceeds is the restoration of the serpentine walls that wrap around the University gardens, Stalfort said, adding that "the University has always been a good supporter of Garden Week."
