Former Virginia swimmer Ed Moses placed third in the 100-meter breaststroke of the FINA world swimming championship in Fukuoka, Japan, on Tuesday. Moses finished behind world record holder Roman Sloudnov of Russia and 2000 Olympic gold medallist Domenico Fiorvanti with a time of 1 minute, 61 milliseconds.
Sloudnov, who broke his own world record in Monday's semifinals with a 59.94, beat Fiorvanti in the finals by 31 milliseconds with a 1:00.16.
Moses also advanced to the finals of the 200 breast on Wednesday with a sixth-place time of 2:13.27. In addition to the 100 breast and 200 breast, Moses will also participate in the 50 breast that begins Saturday.
Grimes earns scholarship
The NCAA postgraduate scholarship committee selected Virginia swimmer Jamie Grimes as a recipient of a 2000-2001 NCAA postgraduate scholarship.
Grimes, the Cavs' captain last year, also received a 2001 Weaver-James-Corrigan postgraduate scholarship. Grimes has exhausted his NCAA eligibility and will graduate in May 2002 with a degree in biology. He is also working on a master's in secondary education.
Last season, Grimes was an honorable mention All-American in the 1,650-yard freestyle for his 15th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in March. He also finished third in both the 500 and 1,650 free in the 2001 ACC Championships in February.
