Young rejoins Cavaliers as softball coach

Virginia softball coach Cheryl Sprangel announced yesterday that Meg Young will be a graduate assistant coach for the Cavaliers.

Young is pursuing a master's in physiology with a concentration in strength and conditioning after graduating from Virginia with a degree in Spanish in May 2001.

Young was a standout Cavalier during her playing days. She holds 13 school records, including most games played (261), at-bats (881), hits (285), total bases (408), runs (149), doubles (51) and triples (24).

  • Young started every game of her career, including 69 games last season. She led the Cavaliers to a 52-17 record last year. Young also played every inning of every game in her career. She finished with a 152-111 record with the Cavaliers.

    Young's numerous 2001 honors include being named to the All-Southeast Region first team, the All-ACC team and the Eastern College Athletic Conference all-stars.

    Young also was named to the ACC All-tournament team for the fourth time in her career in 2001. She was just the second player in ACC history to accomplish such a feat.

    The Cavaliers open the fall portion of their 2001-2002 season this weekend as they host the U.Va. Fall Tournament. Virginia, Hampton, James Madison and Longwood congregate at The Park in Charlottesville this weekend.
