Abrams named ACC specialist of the week

Cavalier punter Mike Abrams was named the ACC specialist of the week for his performance against Florida State on Saturday.

Abrams, a senior from Aiken, S.C., averaged 43.9 yards on seven punts against the No. 19 Seminoles. Abrams sent one punt 67 yards - the longest punt in the ACC this season. Abrams kicked two punts, one for 54 yards and the other, 49 yards.

Abrams is ranked second in the ACC in punting this season with an average of 43.2 yards. His punts have helped the Cavaliers keep punt returns to a net average of 39.81 yards, the eighth best average in the nation.

BCS standings released

The first Bowl Championship Series standings for the 2001 NCAA football season were released Monday. The only ACC team currently ranked in the top 15 is No. 8 Maryland. Oklahoma is ranked No. 1, Virginia Tech is ranked No. 5 and Miami is ranked No. 4.

The BCS rankings differ somewhat from the AP poll, which ranks Maryland No. 10, Miami No. 1, and Oklahoma No. 2. The Hokies remain No. 5.
