Lundy names new chief of staff

Student Council President-elect Daisy Lundy named her 2003-2004 executive committee appointments last night. The group will be led by first-year College student Noah Sullivan, who will serve as next year's chief of staff.

Sullivan currently serves as First Year Council President and is a non-voting representative at Student Council meetings in that capacity. Sullivan also recently was elected as a College Representative and will have to relinquish that position to become chief of staff. Arts and Sciences Council President-elect Mollie Sledd will appoint someone to fill Sullivan's post.

"It's a good tradeoff, because the chief of staff has their hands in almost every aspect of student life and that's definitely exciting," Sullivan said.

Lundy said she eagerly anticipates working with Sullivan next year.

"Noah is pragmatic and progressive," Lundy said. "We share a common vision for Council."

The chief of staff oversees and supports the activities of Council's committees. He also will serve as an assistant to the president.

To round out the executive officer appointments, Council tapped first-year Darden student Peter Acherson to serve as its next chief financial officer.

Although anticipating a rocky financial situation with the appropriations shortfall this year, Acherson said he looks forward to his new position on Council.

"To be honest, it will be a difficult year," Acherson said. "We won't be facing anything that Council hasn't faced before though."

The CFO handles Council's finances and creates a budget for the 2003-2004 school year. The budget must receive approval from the representative body.

The Council chief technology advisor handles the organization's technical initiatives and informs the representative body of technology developments that possibly could benefit the student body. He also oversees the Council Web site.

First-year Darden student Dan Entin said he looks forward to stepping up to this position.

"My job is to insure that Student Council and its related student bodies are maximizing their use of technology," he said.

Third-year Engineering student Ed Hallen will hold the newly reformed position of director of university relations. Until last week, this position was called coordinator of university committees.

Current Council President Micah Schwartz sponsored the bill that changed the position in the Council's bylaws at last night's Council meeting.

The bylaws now define the position in terms of education, outreach, public relations and the handling of University committee appointments.

Hallen said he looks forward to taking on this newly expanded role within Council.

"My job is to encourage communication between Council and student groups," Hallen said. "This will allow partnerships to form that will better serve student interests."

Lundy expressed enthusiasm about working with her new executive members.

"I'm really looking forward to working with the talented individuals on our team," Lundy said.
