Ryan to coach U.S. in 2003 Pan American Games

Virginia women's basketball coach Debbie Ryan was selected to head the United States squad in this year's Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The women's basketball portion of the games will be held August 2-9.

This marks Ryan's fifth USA Basketball coaching assignment. She led the 1988 USA Junior World Championship qualifying team to a 7-0 record and a gold medal finish and took home another gold in 2001 at the Women's World University Games in Beijing, China. Her success in the tournament, including an 87-69 victory over host China in the gold medal game, earned her USA Basketball Developmental Coach of the Year.

Ryan also served as a member of the USA Basketball Games Committee for Women and the USA Basketball Women's Player Subcommittee from 1988 to 1992, where she helped select players for the 1990 World Championship and 1992 Olympic teams.

The Pan American Games are held every four years and are open to countries from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean. The field of participants for the women's basketball competition is still unknown. The U.S. team for the competition will be determined during the 2003 USA Basketball Women's National Team Trials on May 22-25 in Colorado Springs, CO.
