Charlottesville resident and well-known activist Priscilla Whiting, 72, died of respiratory illness Friday.
Whiting, longtime president of the City's NAACP branch, was known for her outspokenness and involvement in contentious issues during her tenure.
In the 1980s, Whiting and the NAACP supported a system called school pairing, which was geared at stamping out any differences in the quality of public school education in certain areas of the city.
She was also reported as lamenting the increased difficulty in recruiting young people to join the civil rights movement these days, as opposed to the more turbulent era of the 1970s.
Whiting is survived by her husband, Frederick Massie Whiting. The two were married for 52 years.
