Thirty University of California at Berkeley students, who were disqualified from the U.S. Department of Education's Fulbright fellowship awards after FedEx couriers failed to pick up applications on time, may still have a chance to be considered for the awards.
The Contra Costa Times reported that the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board has decided that it will review a prior decision to disqualify the students after the applications were not received before the Oct. 20 deadline.
Berkeley graduate student Jason Seawright told the Chronicle of Higher Education the applications were originally supposed to be sent online to the Department of Education; however, the submission system kept "freezing up." The university then lobbied the Education Department to accept applications by mail, which was granted.
The applications, however, were never picked up by FedEx couriers on the deadline day.
Education officials countered Berkeley's claim, saying that officials should have taken the applications to the post office after it became apparent that FedEx would not arrive on time.
