Current stocks of blood at Charlottesville hospitals have reached a dangerously low level, according to Virginia Blood Services.
"Starting with the holidays, blood supply is always low," Virginia Blood Services spokesperson Nancy Deane said. "We have been able to get just enough blood to keep the hospitals operating, and now with the severe weather and the huge use of blood we have insufficient product to deliver to the people who need it."
Because of numerous users of O-positive and A-negative blood types, inventory levels of these blood types are down by 50 percent. In addition, a national blood shortage and continuing severe weather conditions have made blood to replace this deficit unavailable.
The need for transfusions has been high over the past few weeks and has managed to trump donated blood every day.
"We need sustained donations for a good week or two to get us out of this critical situation," Deane said.
Patients in Charlottesville hospitals require over 100 units of blood per day.
