Police charged two University students with felony breaking and entering after they were found walking away from Monticello early Sunday morning, according to Albemarle Police Lt. Earl Newton.
Connor Hyland Ginley, 20, of Chancellor Street, and Heather Lynn Horn, 22, of Jefferson Park Avenue, were freed on bond after being charged.
Newton said a security guard on duty heard a noise "like shutters rattling" and a female voice in another part of the mansion. The guard called out to the perpetrators, got a response from them and proceeded to call another security guard. The two guards then detained Ginley and Horn as they were walking away.
Newton said Albemarle County Police received a call around 2 a.m. Sunday.
"It appeared they had opened a shutter in what is a closed-in porch and had gotten into that area there," Newton said.
Authorities saw a partially opened window, but Newton said nothing appeared to have been damaged or taken from Thomas Jefferson's former home.
"They didn't get inside the mansion itself," Newton said.
