2004 Jefferson Scholarship recipients announced

The Jefferson Scholars Foundation Board of Directors announced Friday the 39 recipients of the 2004 Jefferson Scholarships -- four-year scholarships awarded to talented incoming first-year students.

The merit-based scholarships cover tuition, room and board, books and other University expenses for incoming students who exemplify exceptional potential in the areas of scholarship, leadership and citizenship.

This year's winners were chosen from 836 original nominees. During the last weekend in March, 95 finalists were invited to Charlottesville to participate in the Jefferson Scholars Foundation's national selection.

James H. Wright, executive director of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, said the finalists took a math exam, wrote essays, interviewed with University officials and participated in seminars conducted by professors.

Wright said he was impressed by the 95 finalists who were invited to Charlottesville.

"It was an outstanding group of people, and all 95 were very, very talented," Wright said. "We believe that all of them were impressed with the University and would like to come here. My hope is that over half of them will."

Last year, the University offered 36 scholarships. Wright said the Jefferson endowment was larger, and the investment climate was improved this year.

The average combined SAT score for this year's Jefferson Scholarship recipients is 1512, and all recipients rank in the top 10 percent of their high school class.
