Students elect Nelson Council President

Hood, Panda will fill Student Council vice presidential posts; Nelson vows to focus on tangible goals, fulfill campaign promises of being proactive, improving appropriations

Third-year College student John Nelson officially was named the next Student Council president last night, while second-year College student Colin Hood and second-year Engineering student Nikhil Panda also secured positions on Council’s executive committee.

“I’m very excited,” Nelson said. “I think it was a very close race with some very qualified candidates ... The Council has been something that I’ve always dedicated a lot of my time to.”

Nelson, the outgoing vice president of administration, also noted his intentions to follow through with his campaign promises.

“My campaign [focused] on tangible goals and really improving our outreach and really just being proactive, improving appropriations, cutting our costs and spending student money more efficiently,” Nelson said. “All those things, they weren’t empty promises — they’re things I really want to get done this year.”

Outgoing Council President Matt Schrimper, a third-year College student, only had praise for Nelson.

“I’ve worked with John since first year, and honestly I think John will do a fantastic job,” Schrimper said. “I’ve always been proud to work with him.”

Also elected to the executive committee was second-year College student Colin Hood, the current Council safety and wellness committee vice-chair, who will succeed fourth-year College student Kayla Wherry as Council vice president for organizations.

“I’m really glad that the students believed in my position, my ability to do [the job] and value my experience on the CIO side, as well as the Student Council side [of the appropriations process],” Hood said.

Wherry said both Hood and his opponent were very competent individuals, and advised Hood to prepare for the challenges ahead.

“Colin is a very capable person, and I think he’ll do a good job,” Wherry said. “My advice would just be to get to know the position and the appropriations as quickly as possible, to set goals immediately and to realize that there are a lot of things that need to be done for next year.”

Joining Hood on Council’s executive committee as the next vice president for administration will be Nikhil Panda, who won an uncontested race. Panda noted that because he did not have any opponents, he took the time to plan ahead for next year.

“I could work on things ahead of time and get a head start on what I wanted to do next year,” Panda said. “That’s been a real luxury.”

Aside from the executive committee, third-year Steven Reilly was elected for the third time as Architecture School representative, while third-year Eugene Resnick, second-year Sipian Wang, and first-years Aaron Wilson and Saide Ashaboglu were chosen to represent the College.

Additionally, third-year Iberedem Ekure was re-elected as Engineering School representative in an uncontested race, as was second-year Law student Corey Clay.

Third-year Scott Rosen was chosen for the Commerce School Council, while David Hondula and Alexandra Garcia will represent the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.

Second-year Madeline Matthews will represent the Nursing School, and Aadil Bhavnagri will represent the School of Continuing and Professional Studies.

Schrimper said he has confidence in the new administration.

“I think there’s a great depth of talent in Council,” Schrimper said. “As a whole, the executive committee and representatives will do a great job.”
