Officials investigate vandalism incident

Field at Scott Stadium sees mild damage by unknown culprits using maintenance vehicle

University officials are conducting an investigation into an act of vandalism reported in Scott Stadium last week.

University Police Captain Michael Coleman said his department received the report from the athletic department at 6:50 a.m. Friday.

"When we came in on Friday morning, what we observed was that a utility vehicle had been driven on the field and did some turns," said Jason Bauman, associate athletics director for facilities and operations.

Bauman added that it was a University maintenance vehicle that was used to cause the damage.

The cost of repairing the damage to the field was minimal, he said.

"Our No. 1 objective is to deliver a safe and playable field," Bauman said. "In this case, the integrity of the field had not been affected."

Grounds crews spent Friday morning repairing the circular tire marks and torn-up turf, finishing in time for Saturday's game against Eastern Michigan.

"We wanted it to look the best that it could for Saturday's game," Bauman said.

University police officials are currently unsure of how the person or persons involved gained access to Scott Stadium and the equipment therein. The police department could not comment on the specifics of this active investigation, Coleman added.

Overall, he said, vandalism is not a frequent issue at the University.

"There are some vandalisms that occur here every year - mostly in academic areas or in the housing areas," he said.
