University and Charlottesville police officials saw a dramatic decrease in the number of reported crimes on Grounds and in surrounding neighborhoods this Winter Break compared to last year during the same period.
The number of larcenies reported on Grounds decreased from 28 in December 2009 to 12 in Dec. 2010, University Police Lt. Melissa Fielding said in an e-mail. University police received reports of seven burglaries in December 2010, down one from eight in December 2009.
The area has also seen a drop in off-Grounds crimes.
According to Lt. Ronnie Roberts, Charlottesville authorities received reports of four burglaries this Winter Break compared to 15 last year, a drop of about 73 percent.
Roberts said Charlottesville Police increased patrols in areas that saw a drop in crime and attributed the decline in the crime rate to proactive policing, as well as a collaborative effort among the University, the students and local police to raise awareness of personal security.
