UJC plans awareness events

Organization announces week of activities aimed at educating student body

From Feb. 28 to March 4, the University Judiciary Committee will aim to make the general student body more aware of the organization, its standards and procedures, the committee announced Sunday.

"It will be a good opportunity to teach people about what we do," UJC Chair Will Bane said.

The committee plans to involve the University in its efforts, UJC Senior Educator Victoria Marchetti said. The event will provide "the opportunity to target a lot of groups that we haven't been able to [target] in the past," she said.

Specifically, the week will involve a mock trial that will replicate UJC procedures. The event is intended to educate students about the type of work the organization does. The committee will explain how it determines sanctions, as well, Marchetti said.

"What we do is so behind closed doors," she said. "A lot of students don't know how a trial actually works, so this will engage discussion on what UJC does and how we do it."

In past years, the mock trial has been considered a Fraternal Organization Agreement, one of several possible required educational programs for Greek organizations on Grounds. UJC plans to continue this tradition to increase levels of interest and participation.

"We want to have panel discussions in the midst of trying to work with other groups during this week to get our word out and really engage different groups in the community," Marchetti said.
