The Honor Committee held internal elections for the new incoming leadership at its annual retreat this weekend. Members elected the new chair, third-year College student Ann Marie McKenzie, who only recently joined the Committee after she was appointed as a College representative.
Third-year College student Brandon Kist, who was elected as a College representative for the upcoming term, resigned from his position last Friday, creating a vacancy on the Committee.
Following constitutional by-laws, Paul Murray, president of the Arts & Sciences Council, appointed McKenzie to take Kist's place.
Outgoing Committee Chair Charles Harris said this circumstance is "not unheard of and is anticipated in the constitution." The president of the school from which the representative resigns is "expected to fill those vacancies," Harris said.
The student body elects five representatives from the College to the Committee. McKenzie was appointed because she finished sixth-place in the student body elections from the College and originally lost by a very small margin, Harris said, adding he believes Murray's decision was expressive of the student body's will.
After Murray appointed McKenzie, she became "a fully vested member in the Committee," Harris said.
At the Commitee's retreat, McKenzie ran for the position of chair and won.
"[McKenzie] made it through one of the toughest decision making processes," Harris said.
McKenzie said she is "really looking forward to working with [the incoming] Committee. Everybody's really excited about being here. This is an exceptionally talented group."
Other members of Committee also were elected to leadership positions during the retreat.
Third-year Engineering student Jack Valentine was elected vice chair for community relations, third-year College student Carter Houghton elected vice chair for education, first-year Batten student Anna Mohan elected as vice chair for trials and third-year College student Liz Rosenberg elected as vice chair for investigations.
Third-year College students Ellie Perkins, Remy Wheat and Alex Eschenroeder will serve on the incoming Diversity Advisory Board and second-year Law student Barlow Mann will serve on the Faculty Advisory Board.
The incoming Committee officially will become the standing Committee April 4.
