In an attempt to illustrate the concept of opportunity cost, economics professors tell their students, "There's no such thing as a free lunch." Then their students turn around and offer them just that - a free lunch.
The Take Your Professor to Lunch program, sponsored by the Arts & Sciences Council, allows students to take their professors out to lunch on the University's dime. This program exemplifies the Jeffersonian ideal of professors and students interacting both in and beyond the classroom.
"The program started 13 years ago, when parents of a deceased student contributed $500 to the college for students to take their professors out to lunch," said Sharon French, who heads the program. "It was so well-received that the University turned it into a permanent program."
The program remains very popular.
