Virginia men's tennis player Jarmere Jenkins defeated three world-ranked competitors en route to earning the singles title at the Purnell-Thomas Memorial Tennis Tournament Sunday afternoon in Salisbury, Md. Jenkins became the first amateur to win the charity event - which showcases 64 of the world's top professional and amateur athletes - since 1986.
Jenkins, who entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed, secured victory at the event with an impressive 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 triumph against No. 2 seed Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium. Bemelmans entered the championship touting a No. 147 world ranking but ultimately became the third straight top-200 world player to fall to the Virginia junior. Earlier during the competition, Jenkins upset both No. 122 Grega Zemlja and No. 169 Yuichi Sugita to earn a spot in the singles finals.
