Virginia women's basketball coach Joanne Boyle paid close attention this week as the all-time winningest coach in Division I history won a hard-fought game on national television - and she was not watching Duke's Mike Krzyzewski. After Duke beat Michigan State to give Krzyewski his Division I men's record-setting 903rd win Tuesday, Boyle tuned into ESPN2 to watch Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt win her 1,073rd game with a victory against Miami.
Summitt and the No. 3 Lady Volunteers come to Charlottesville Sunday after knocking off the Hurricanes, 92-76, and look to hand the Cavaliers their season's first loss for the third straight year. The Lady Volunteers snapped Virginia's 3-0 and 2-0 records in 2009 and 2010, respectively, exacting some revenge for the Cavaliers' upset of Tennessee in 2008.
Three years ago, Virginia (3-0) followed up a double-digit win against High Point with the unlikely upset, capitalizing on 35 points from then-junior Monica Wright to defeat back-to-back national champion Tennessee in Knoxville.
"It was amazing; I will never forget that feeling," senior guard Ariana Moorer said of the win. "[Sunday's] definitely going to a dog fight, so we're going to need everybody to bring their A-game and be ready."
