ACC loses third Challenge

The Big Ten claimed its third consecutive victory in the annual Big Ten-ACC Challenge as eight of its 12 teams bested their respective ACC opponents. Virginia did its part for the conference by dispatching No. 14 Michigan in the first Challenge contest Tuesday, but beyond Clemson's 71-55 success against Iowa, the day belonged to the Big Ten.

Second-ranked Ohio State slaughtered No. 4 Duke 85-63 behind 21 points from stud sophomore forward Jared Sullinger, handing the Blue Devils their first defeat this year. Senior forward Robbie Hummel, who did not play last year because of a torn ACL, looked healthy pouring in 17 points during Purdue's 76-65 win against Miami. Northwestern and Illinois both remained unbeaten despite playing their Challenge tilts on the road as the Wildcats bested Georgia Tech, 76-60, and the Fighting Illini downed Maryland 71-62.

The second half of Challenge play resumed Wednesday and featured four more ACC losses as the Big Ten convincingly clinched the Commissioner's Cup. Indiana continued its perfect season start by topping N.C. State, 86-75, and sophomore guard Tim Frazier tallied 20 second-half points as Penn State clipped Boston College 62-54.

Michigan State made amends for earlier losses to North Carolina and Duke with a 65-49 win against Florida State, while Minnesota edged Virginia Tech, 58-55, in the Golden Gophers' first game since senior forward Trevor Mbakwe suffered a season-ending ACL injury. Wake Forest and North Carolina won consolation victories for the ACC as the Demon Deacons defeated Nebraska 55-53 and the Tar Heels held off Wisconsin 60-57.
