Anderson drafted by Dallas Mavericks, Atkins signs Summer League deal with Spurs

Former Virginia wing Justin Anderson was selected by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2015 NBA Draft Thursday night. As the draft’s 21st pick, Anderson becomes the first Virginia player to be taken in the first round since the San Antonio Spurs drafted Cory Alexander 29th overall in 1995.

Anderson set career highs in points, rebounds, three-point shooting and minutes last season while leading the Cavaliers to their second-consecutive ACC regular season championship and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen.

Anderson will be the eighth Virginia player to be taken in the first round and will join Mike Scott and Joe Harris as the third Cavalier drafted since 2012.

The Mavericks went 50-32 in 2014-15 and made the playoffs as the Western Conference’s seventh seed but fell to the Houston Rockets 4-1 in the opening round.

Anderson will be coached by former Cavalier Rick Carlisle in Dallas. Carlisle played at Virginia between 1982 and 1984, won a NBA championship as a player with the Boston Celtics in 1986, and coached the Mavericks to a title in 2011.

Forward Darion Atkins, who went undrafted, will play for the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA’s summer league, which runs from July 10-20 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
