Virginia cross country turned in top-five performances against elite competition Friday at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wisconsin.

The then-No. 17 Cavalier women finished third with 217 points, ahead of 11 ranked programs. Top-ranked New Mexico won the meet with 32 points. No. 11 Arkansas’ 188 points were good for second. Virginia bested four top-ten teams — No. 3 Providence, No. 6 Boise State, No. 8 Iowa State and No. 10 Washington. The strong showing catapulted the Cavaliers 10 spots in the most recent USTFCCCA poll.

Junior Cleo Boyd placed 20th with a time of 20:09.0 to lead the Cavaliers. Graduate student Iona Lake was right behind Boyd in the 22nd spot. Sophomore Megan Rebholz crossed the line in 28th place, and graduate student Sarah Astin and freshman Emily Mulhern completed the scoring five in 72nd and 75th, respectively.

The seventh-ranked Virginia men placed fourth with 238 points. No. 2 Syracuse took the team title with 101 points. No. 4 BYU and No. 5 Michigan finished behind the Orange with 186 and 218 points, respectively. The Cavaliers finished ahead of No. 4 Stanford and No. 5 Iona.

Junior Henry Wynne led Virginia with a ninth-place finish. Sophomore Chase Weaverling and junior Adam Visokay finished back-to-back in 41st and 42nd place, respectively. Sophomore Brent Demarest placed 69th and senior Kyle King finished 77th to round out the scoring five.

Virginia competes next on Oct. 30 in the ACC Championships, hosted by Florida State.
