LETTER: Andrew Sneathern is the best candidate to turn the Fifth District blue

There are four amazing Democrats running to take on and defeat Tom Garrett (R) in November, but Andrew Sneathern stands out as the candidate with extensive policy positions and an ability to reach across differences and represent a large variety of people.  I have read letters from the candidates, read endorsements, visited their websites, watched forums and talked with supporters, and Sneathern truly impresses.

In addition to being the most progressive candidate in the race, he has also proposed actual policy positions such as, but definitely not limited to, Medicare for All, standing against the proposed Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipelines, protecting DACA recipients and working to solve youth unemployment. In fact, he has already worked towards creating solutions through pledges he has taken and his work as an attorney.

Andrew Sneathern is the positive, progressive and rural candidate who can turn this district blue. While his positions are something students should be excited for, Andrew is also the best positioned to win the Fifth District and take support away from Garrett.

As a hunter, Andrew knows how to talk to gun owners about common sense gun laws; as someone who grew up in a rural area, he can speak to farmers about how renewable energy wind turbines will allow them to have two crops, not just one.

Andrew worked hard to put himself through college and can relate to students who have impending student loans upon graduation — he can represent the diverse needs of University students.

I’m proud to stand up and support Andrew in this race, and I hope you will too. As a reminder, the upcoming Democratic nomination process for the Fifth District will be conducted by caucus. I implore you if you are registered here at the University to caucus for Andrew Sneathern.
