The No. 6 Virginia men’s soccer team lost at home Saturday to No. 1 Wake Forest in a 3-2 thriller.
The Cavaliers (9-2-2, 3-2-1 ACC) fell behind in the fourteenth minute when Wake Forest (15-1, 6-1 ACC) sophomore forward Machop Chol tapped in a rebound off of a shot from his teammate, sophomore midfielder Omir Fernandez, which had been saved by Virginia sophomore goalkeeper Colin Shutler.
Virginia equalized in the 64th minute, on the first collegiate goal by sophomore wingback Irakoze Donasiyano. The goal came on a long shot from outside the box that snuck past freshman goalkeeper Dominic Peters.
In the 73rd minute, the Cavaliers took a 2-1 lead. Sophomore midfielder Joe Bell put a corner kick into the box, where it was headed down by freshman forward Cabrel Happi Kamseu, before falling to freshman forward Daniel Steedman, who put it in the back of the net with a bicycle kick.
Wake Forest scored the final two goals of the match within 1:37 of each other, in the 77th and 78th minutes. One goal was scored by senior defender Logan Gdula, while the second was scored by sophomore forward Justin McMaster.
Virginia honored their five seniors before the match — defenders Prosper Figbe and Sergi Nus, midfielder Daniel Barir, and forwards Simeon Okoro and Kennedy Nwabia.
The Cavaliers next play at home Tuesday against Notre Dame. This will be the final home game of the regular season for Virginia, who finish their season next Friday on the road against North Carolina.
