University reports 80 active COVID-19 cases as the first week of the semester ends

The University has seen 84 total cases of COVID-19 this semester

COVID-19 cases continued into the fall semester this week with 44 new cases diagnosed between Sunday and Friday night. This brings the total number of active cases to 80, according to the University’s COVID-19 tracker. Of the active cases, 32 are students and 48 are faculty and staff.

The seven-day average positivity rate increased from 1.71 percent on Sunday to 2.11 percent on Friday. On Friday afternoon, the weekly average positivity rate for students was 2.52 percent, compared to 1.87 percent for faculty and staff.

Since last Fall, the University has administered 386,221 COVID-19 tests, with a seven-day average of 358.14 people tested reported on Thursday. Between Sunday and Thursday, the average time for U.Va. Health to complete a test was 19 hours.

This semester, all students living in the Charlottesville and Albemarle area who are not vaccinated are required to report for testing on a weekly basis. Faculty and staff can also undergo voluntary asymptomatic testing during walk-in testing hours. As of Wednesday, all U.Va. Health employees are required to be vaccinated. If a student fails to comply with mandatory testing, one of four punishments increasing in severity will be instituted.

In order to return to residential learning, students had to either submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination to HealthyHoos or provide documentation of an approved medical or religious exemption. Faculty and staff were not required, but were encouraged, to get vaccinated before returning to in-person teaching. As of Aug. 2, 93 percent of students and 89 percent of faculty and staff had been fully vaccinated.

Seven patients were admitted to U.Va. Health with COVID-19 Thursday, bringing the current total of hospitalizations related to COVID-19 to 43. On Thursday, the seven-day average for new hospitalizations was 5.43.

The University’s COVID-19 tracker is updated every weekday at 4 p.m.
