Like the farm-to-table menu it boasts, Tavern & Grocery, located at 333 West Main Street, is considered a classic among Charlottesville residents and University students alike. This year, the tried and true restaurant participated in Charlottesville’s Restaurant Week. I stopped by during the week to experience Tavern & Grocery’s special menu for the occasion, which comes with the choice of an appetizer, entree and dessert for a set price of $45. Needless to say, I found the restaurant, service and meal to be wonderfully satisfying and a jewel of the Charlottesville restaurant scene — no matter your taste, they have something for everyone.

Even though Thanksgiving has already passed, it is never too late to learn how to bake an apple pie from scratch and create something delicious for your friends and family. Apple pies are a timeless classic and my personal favorite dessert. As someone who enjoys eating extra sour green apples on the daily, baking apple pie is my love letter to my favorite fruit.

All the signs are here — the leaves have turned brown, the flannel has come out and turkey sales are going through the roof. The inevitable is coming — unseasonably early Christmas celebrations. Yes, it’s that most wonderful time when all can gather around to collectively watch people forget Thanksgiving exists and move straight on to anticipating a holiday more than a month away. But what causes this strange phenomenon, and how can you, confused University student, protect yourself from it?

One of my favorite memories from last semester comes from the celebration of an important part of my identity as a first-generation college student. I feel somewhat perplexed saying that because I didn't even know what this term meant at the start of my college career — let alone that I was considered a first-generation student.

Whether Virginia is in the midst of a winning or losing season, one thing remains constant — tailgates. Parking lots all across Grounds are filled to the brim with cars, food and high spirits. Students, families and alumni can be counted on to come together for the sake of enjoying one another's company before a game. No matter the age of the fan, students, family and alumni alike share one major motivation when they attend University tailgates — to share in the company of one another.

This is a really tricky situation for many reasons. He is a friend and you do not want to lose your friendship with him. That is scary. It is also natural that you would want to make your friend happy, but what he wants might be at odds with your happiness. That can be confusing.

Every day, students walk past the Kitty Foster Memorial located right outside of Nau Hall. Dedicated in 2011, the memorial includes a metal “shadow catcher” structure to sit where her house did and a small wall outlining a cemetery for the predominantly free Black community Foster was a part of. There are also three brief, faded informational signs. While the memorial highlights the archaeological importance of the site, it should provide more vital information and context to the significance of Foster and the broader Venable Lane community.
