A conversation with Kevin Spacey

The University welcomed world-renowned entertainer Kevin Spacey to John Paul Jones Arena Saturday, in the second installment of the President’s Speaker for the Arts series. The sold-out event was preceded by performances from University dance students and selections from the University Singers’, in celebration of the University’s revitalized commitment to enriching arts initiatives and programs across a variety of creative outlets.

The Working Effective works its folk-rock magic

Local folk-rock enthusiasts abandoned their usual Wednesday night antics this past week to gather at The Southern for an evening full of wistful melodies, vibrant chords and the occasional charming pun by indie-folk band The Working Effective.The crowd convened in the friendly café to laugh over drinks and joke about leather shoes and indie coffee shops.

The Vaselines’ latest fails to break new ground

There are a lot of alternative bands in which a guy and girl sing in unison. Groups like The Young Evils, Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Chamber Band and Broods all make use of this style to some extent.The Vaselines, however, have been making jangly dual-vocalist alternative music since 1986.
