“The women did a good job and set the stage for a big finish next year as all seven runners return in 2026,” Coach Vin Lananna said.
While they did end up punching a ticket in the secondary selection process, for both teams it was a clear regression from last year’s performance.
For the first time since 2008, Virginia has won the ACC men’s cross country championship –– the fifth conference title in program history.
The last time Virginia has won a men’s ACC Championship in cross country was in 2008. This is likely their best chance to claim it.
Each of Virginia's teams moved up one spot from their finishes at last year's NCAA Championships.
Virginia will have work to do Saturday morning at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Both Virginia teams qualified for nationals with impressive performances.
Martin won the men's 8k with a blistering time of 22:17.6.
The women's team earned first place and the men's picked up second in a successful Saturday morning.
The Cavalier men and women each finished just outside the top 10 in a competitive field.
Will Anthony holds the Virginia program record in the 10,000m. He also has a perfect grade point average.
Although the Cavaliers had the privilege of hosting the event, each team came away feeling like it could do better.

The Cavaliers placed third out of 15 teams in the women’s event and sixth out of 15 teams in the men’s event.
Out of 18 teams for women, the Cavaliers won first overall.
Out of the 19 teams for women and 15 teams for men, both Cavalier teams placed first overall.
The Cavaliers started the outdoor cross country season off strong, but underperformed against highly competitive teams at the Joe Piane/Notre Dame Invitational.
The cross country teams built on the success from their first meet of the season.
Virginia placed first among six schools competing this weekend.
