Expert predicts dismal future for state budget

Though Virginia's economy has already suffered during the recent recession, at least one expert suspects the worst is yet to come. In the most recent issue of the Virginia News Letter, published by the University's Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, James Regimbal Jr.

Parties debate health care reform

A Media General poll conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research during the past several weeks found that 49 percent of Virginians are against President Obama's health care plan, and that 80 percent fear that a public health care program would raise their taxes. The data, released Tuesday in newspapers across the state, was collected through 625 telephone interviews with registered voters who said they planned to cast their vote Nov.

IFC-sponsored blood drive starts off strong

Law School names Jennifer Hulvey head of financial aid

The Law School recently named Jennifer Hulvey as its new director of financial aid. Hulvey has worked in financial aid for about 18 years and has worked at the University since July 2007 in student financial services, primarily assisting with the implementation of the new Student Information System. "She brings a wealth of experience regarding financial aid from all different viewpoints," said Jason Wu Trujillo, senior assistant dean for admissions and financial aid.

American Academy inducts Casteen, faculty members

University President John T. Casteen, III and three faculty members were inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences on Saturday. The AAAS has honored excellence and service to the nation and the world since 1780, according to the organization's Web site, electing members who are "men and women of exceptional achievement, drawn from science, scholarship, business, public affairs, and the arts." This year, in addition to Casteen, the AAAS inducted Law Prof.

Poe House pays tribute to author with funeral

One of the University's most famous alumni was buried Sunday. Again. The Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum honored author and former University student Edgar Allan Poe with a funeral in Baltimore 160 years after his death, said event organizer and Poe House Curator Jeff Jerome.

Honor discusses Semester at Sea

Honor Chair David Truetzel presented a proposal at last night's Honor Committee meeting that would give expelled Semester at Sea students the right to request a new trial if found guilty of an academic honor offense during the program.

Funlola Fagbohun, associate director of the first year experience, describes her experience working with OTP and how she strives to create a welcoming environment for first-years during orientation and beyond. Along with her role as associate director, summer Orientation leaders and OTP staff work continually to provide a safe and memorable experience for incoming students.
