Officials discuss University's lack of prior knowledge about 2008 Huguely arrest

Casteen, III said he was unaware of the 2008 arrest of former men's lacrosse player George Huguely, who was charged with first degree murder Monday in relation to the death of Yeardley Love, who played for the women's team. Love died after physical confrontation, affidavit shows

Fourth-year College student George Huguely - who was charged with first-degree murder in connection to the death of fourth-year College student Yeardley Love yesterday - admitted to police officials that "he shook Love and her head repeatedly hit the wall" during an altercation, according to an affidavit for a search warrant. Huguely, a former member of the men's lacrosse team, also admitted that he broke into Love's bedroom by kicking his right foot through the door.

Police charge lacrosse player with homicide of fellow student-athlete

Charlottesville Police charged fourth-year College student George Huguely with first-degree murder yesterday in connection with the death of fourth-year College student Yeardley Love, who passed away early Monday morning. Both Huguely and Love, members of the men's and women's lacrosse teams, respectively, were set to graduate May 23. Charlottesville police officers were called to apartment 9 in the Camden Courtyard complex on 14th Street at 2:15 a.m.

Senate backs idea of non-tenure rank

The Faculty Senate recently voted unanimously to support the principle of creating a new rank called the professor of practice, which will allow schools to hire distinguished professionals for short-term, non-tenure-track teaching positions. "This rank will allow us to attract accomplished professionals whose qualifications, while outstanding, do not conform to those of a member of the tenured faculty," according to materials drawn up by the Office of the Executive Vice President & Provost for Faculty Senate review. The proposal calls for no more than five professors of practice to be chosen at a time for any given school.

UJC weighs past labors, future plans

As the semester comes to a close, members of the University Judiciary Committee are working to improve outreach programs and maintain strong levels of internal diversity. So far, UJC has succeeded in diversifying the organization, Chair Will Bane said. Two years ago, 83 percent of the students who took the test for joining UJC were white, Bane said.

2010 Giving Campaign sees high participation

This year's Class Giving Campaign, a mass fundraising effort targeted at the class of 2010, has seen 50 percent participation with $122,000 total raised, according to campaign chair and former Student Council President Matt Schrimper. The campaign initially set a goal of 60 percent participation.

The No. 1 Virginia baseball team matched a season-high seven-game win streak yesterday night with a 10-5 victory against Georgetown at Davenport Field. After trailing 1-0 entering the bottom half of the second inning, the Cavaliers (36-9) scored 10 straight runs through the fifth inning, with two or more runs coming in each frame.
