Virginia nabs first conference win in fifth try against Tech

The Virginia women's basketball team went on late runs at the end of both halves and weathered an early second half spurt by the Yellow Jackets to bring home their first conference victory of the season yesterday over Georgia Tech, 74-63. "I think we played good defense most of the night," Virginia Coach Debbie Ryan said.

The Virginia women's basketball team looks to break its five-game losing streak and win its first conference game when Georgia Tech comes to town tonight for a 7:30 game at University Hall. The Cavaliers, who enter tonight's game with a 5-9 overall record and a dismal 0-4 conference record, remain optimistic about the season. "We lost all our ACC games," junior guard Anna Prillaman said.

Cavaliers hold off Tar Heel rally, 79-72

After opening up a first half lead of as many as 20 points, Virginia (10-3, 1-1 ACC) held off two second-half surges by North Carolina (9-5, 1-1) and won its home ACC opener, 79-72, Saturday. Junior guard Todd Billet scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the first half behind 5-of-7 shooting on three-pointers as Virginia exploited a UNC zone in the first half, shooting 57 percent and opening up a 48-30 halftime lead.
