Relay for Life robbed at fundraising event

Relay for Life, which raises money for the American Cancer Society, had its proceeds from a fundraising event on the Corner stolen early yesterday morning.? Students were holding a bar night at Mellow Mushroom when a man entered the restaurant and stole an envelope containing the group's money, said third-year College student Kathy Feeney, president of Relay for Life at the University.

Some VCCS graduates assured SEAS admission

Virginia community college graduates who meet certain requirements will now be guaranteed admission to the University's Engineering School because of an agreement signed last month by University President John T.

Lu, Shu plead guilty to abduction charges

Former second-year Engineering students Guanyu Lu and Baichuan Shu pled guilty yesterday morning to abduction with the intent to extort money, according to attorneys involved in the case. The students were arrested in November in Fairfax County for kidnapping Fairfax County resident Paul Wang and holding him against his will in a Falls Church motel. Shu's attorney Daniel Krisky said Shu and Lu had separate hearings, and both pled guilty to the charges to avoid causing further pain to their victim. "The reason they pled guilty is they are guilty of the offense," he said.

U.Va. expands system of laundry alerts

A laundry alert system recently expanded to be available campus-wide will allow University students to monitor the status of washers and dryers of school facilities from the comfort of their own computers. According to Associate Chief Housing Officer Marshall Hunt, the service was available last year in the McCormick Road area as a "test," but was recently extended to all campus facilities with the exception of family housing. A link on the Housing Web site allows students to select a particular facility and then check which machines are currently available and how much time remains in the cycle of machines already in use, Hunt said.

Groves to serve as interim dean

University officials announced Tuesday that Allen Groves will serve as interim dean of students, taking over the role vacated by current Dean of Students Penny Rue. Groves, who currently works as a development officer in the Office of Student Affairs, will assume the role Aug.
