A scramble band with a long history of controversy

In an era when it was perceived that many University traditions such as an all-male student body and a coat and tie dress were coming to an end, three men founded an organization they hoped would be a unique new tradition at the University in the early 1970s, the Virginia Pep Band. Concert bands had existed off and on at the University since the early 1900s, and had reached their highest point between 1934-1940 under the guidance of Chemistry Prof.

William Clark

Also a native of Virginia, Clark was born Aug. 1, 1770, on a plantation in Caroline County. At the age of 14, Clark and his family moved to a plantation in Kentucky on the frontier.

Meriwether Lewis

Born Aug. 18, 1774, in Albemarle County not far from Charlottesville, Lewis was a boyhood neighbor of Thomas Jefferson.

Going West

Just as Capt. Meriwether Lewis and Lt. William Clark embarked 200 years ago on the Corps of Discovery to learn about the great American West, the University now is undertaking an intellectual journey to research and teach the history and development of the West that these two historic figures first brought to the American consciousness. The Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Project is a multidisciplinary four-year endeavor begun in 2000 and funded by the President's Office.

Survey finds freshmen hold more liberal views

First-year students are more interested in politics and are more liberal than in previous years, said a new survey from the University of California-Los Angeles' Higher Education Research Institute. The annual study, in its 36th year and conducted by UCLA's Graduate School of Education and Information, is the largest study of incoming first-year students ever administered.

IFC punishes Kappa Alpha for violations

Kappa Alpha fraternity received three sanctions from the Inter-Fraternity Council after violating a strict no-alcohol policy during rush. In a hearing panel Monday, the IFC judiciary committee placed KA on social probation for three weeks, starting Feb.
