Cultural Programming Board explores event ideas, funding

The Cultural Programming Board held its first informational meeting yesterday for student groups interested in applying for funds.

The Board held a panel discussion in Newcomb Hall where they handed out applications and answered questions about the way funds are allocated to student groups.

The Board, created last spring by William W. Harmon, vice president for student affairs, oversees the allocation of about $30,000 to cultural programs on Grounds.

Cultural programs are defined by the Board as those programs "that provide for the intellectual and artistic expression and exploration of culture."

Board officials said they hope to sponsor some of their own programming.

Eddie Daniels, Board co-chairman and Newcomb Hall director, said the committee has not discussed specific programs yet, but that in the future the Board plans to sponsor many events on Grounds.

The Board received funding last spring and a planning committee formed over the summer.

The students and faculty on the committee were appointed a few weeks ago, Daniels said.

"I heard about the committee this past summer from Vice President Harmon," second-year College student Monique Miles said. "I felt that I could do a good job representing the different cultures at the University. I am involved in many activities around Grounds, so I would like to be a liaison between them all."

Representatives from many different student organizations attended the meeting.

Second-year College student Gordon Braxton said he would like funds to support Brothers United Celebrating Knowledge and Success.

"As a fairly new organization on Grounds we are always looking for new channels of funding," Braxton said. "New resources would allow us to expand our current programs and add new ones. We would use the funds for community service, computer labs and 'Reflections on Complexions,' a race relations forum we are trying to do again."

Third-year College student Kevin Neher said he is trying to obtain funds for Spectrum Theatre and other performing arts groups on Grounds.

"We would like to purchase things for the Student Activities [Building] so theatre and other performance groups can use to enhance existing cultural programs," Neher said.

Organizations interested in receiving funding from the Cultural Programming Board can pick up an event proposal form from Newcomb Hall Room 149 or contact Board Co-Chairwoman Jessica Krechel or Daniels, Miles said.

Proposals are due Dec. 6 and decisions will be made Dec. 17.
